IQIAM

Man friends: shopping just got a lot harder. They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes, and when we met Jai Oberoi, we could tell that he’s a man who, like us, is all about the detail.

Jai launched IQIAM (pronounced I-Q-I-AM) earlier this year, a shoe line that’ll satisfy a man’s every shoe need. The range straddles the casual and formal with easy, including cool trainers and slip-on’s, through to fine leather brogues that we wish they also made for women. And everything is beautifully finished and detailed, from sole through to grommet embellishment. We caught up with Jai at our farm and ran him through our Nico Q&A.
Tell us about the name of your brand.
IQIAM is all about the man who wears it: it’s about his personal style, about making intelligent choices and buying the best, and IQIAM gives him those choices. We cater to a young, confident gentleman with a sense of personal style.

How was IQIAM born?
IQIAM was born from the frustration of not being able to get the footwear I wanted. The quality of footwear and accessories for men that is available in India (both from the point of view of styling as well as quality), is so far from what we really deserve. We buy international brands which compromise on quality and material in order to bring themselves in at a price to be competitive. We don’t compromise on styling, comfort, or quality.
Favourite pair of shoes in your closet?
That’s a tough one, but it would probably have to be my pair of burnished brown full brogue Oxfords. I can wear them with my navy and grey suits or even casually with chinos or jeans. It’s hard to find something that doesn’t look good with such incredibly versatile shoes.

Suits and sneakers?

I’d wear a pair of tan Pablos with all my suits, unless of course it’s a black one, in which case only a classy pair of black cap-toe Oxfords would do.

One thing to look forward to with IQIAM?
One? Certainly not, we want to create an entire wardrobe of fine leather goods for the modern-day gentleman, made up of everything from shoes to bags (duffels, messengers, backpacks, laptop bags, cross bodies, etc) to belts and a whole bunch of other accessories including tech products. We are working on it at the moment and will have lots more launching soon.
