A SHORT CHAT

What is the foundation of the Nicobar Home range?

We love the little things that transform houses into homes. Simplicity and detailing are the cornerstones of our collection, designed to aid in a discovery that creates a home you love.

How do you give your products a contemporary appeal, while retaining the essence of Indian design?

Nicobar Home is a thoroughly modern line that honours Indian material as much as those from across the globe. We want to bring about that balance between the global and Indian design influences, much like a modern Indian’s lifestyle. The best example is the Nicobar kulhar, which was traditionally used for chai. We gave it the Nicobar touch and now wine or champagne can be served in it with equal elegance.

Is there a specific design aesthetic that works well in India?

India is ready to embrace new ideas with much more ease. Our design process involves working on contrasting patterns, and it’s a delight how most customers have really taken to that.

What is your current collection inspired from?

For our entire current collection — Chand Sitara & Fez (dining), Madeira (decor) and Tangiers (textile) — we have looked at bustling markets and exquisite architecture from Gujarat to Morocco to Zanzibar. It’s the journey of Indians who travelled from India to Africa.

What ties all of Nicobar’s products together?

At Nicobar, we make thoughtful pieces that we hope our customers will treasure, while exploring the creative edge of a rich culture and considering how it communicates with a global audience. All our collections and products are designed to imbibe that tropical ease into urban lifestyles for a fuss-free, simple way of living, reflective of the changing mindsets of modern Indians.
